Let me tell about my first encounter with a Great Dane, and then get to why you should pay attention to what I have to say about them...
Although I?ve been around dogs all my life, I?d never met a Great Dane ?up close and personal? until I went over to a buddy?s house to watch a football game one beautiful fall afternoon.
Now, I?d never been over to this particular friend?s house before, so imagine my surprise when I was greeted at the doorway by a ? well, rather large dog! In fact, he resembled a moose more than he did a dog! (Actually, that was his name ? Moose.)
As I approached the door, I could see this dog looking at me through the glass ? evaluating my threat level with a calm, intelligent stare. He barked once, authoritatively, then looked over his shoulder at my buddy, as if to say ?Okay, it?s just another one of your lame friends.?
When my buddy let me in, Moose sniffed my hand, gave me a stern glance as if warning me to behave myself, then calmly walked over and laid down next to my buddy?s chair and went to sleep.
At half-time, we took Moose outside for a fast game of Frisbee, and he was quick and playful and powerful and just awesome to watch as he charged around the yard after the Frisbee.
And yet, when halftime was over, and we went back inside for the second half of the game, there was no pouting or whining or hyper-activity out of Moose ? he knew the Frisbee game was done, and came back in the house and laid down and watched the rest of the football game with us. What a dog!
That began my fascination with this remarkable breed ? Moose was so impressive, so smart, so majestic and yet such a great companion he just blew me away! I?d never seen a dog that could intimidate you with just a glance one minute, and then the next be a playful goof running around the back yard chasing a Frisbee.
Since that time, though I've had a number of different breeds over the years, there's always been a soft spot in my heart for Great Danes.
